Lab Scale Fractional Distillation Apparatus

The B/R 9600 is a lab scale fractional distillation apparatus for high-purity materials and difficult separations. Boiling flasks from 1 to 50 liters. Choose a spinning band or packed column, with full automation and PC control available.

Made in the USA. Typical uses include solvent purification, petroleum fractions, specialty chemicals, and essential oil work. For smaller charges see mini or micro distillation; for larger batches see pilot scale.

Features

Key Features

Spinning Band Column

Spinning band distillation technology combines high efficiency with low hold-up. Less than 1 ml of sample is held up in the distillation column. Typical configurations have all Teflon and glass contact surfaces.

Packed Column

Packed column distillation technology combines high efficiency with high distillation rates. 15 theoretical plate sections, stackable to 15, 30, or 45 theoretical plates for excellent separation.

High Efficiency

Up to 50 theoretical plates at atmospheric pressure for high purity materials and difficult separations.

Customized

The 9600 lab scale system can be configured according to your needs. Automation, vacuum systems, fraction collectors and other accessories can be integrated.

Easy to Use

Automatic heating, distillation control, distillate collection and shutdown. Simple parameter programming.

Lab Scale Fractional Distillation Systems (9600)

A lab scale fractional distillation system sits between analytical-size columns and pilot equipment. The 9600 is built for multi-liter charges where you still need high column efficiency, often 15 to 50 theoretical plates depending on configuration, without moving into stainless pilot plant gear.

Column choice drives performance. A spinning band distillation column uses a rotating helical band for high efficiency and low hold-up (typically less than 1 ml in the column). Packed columns use mesh or Propak packing when higher distillation rates matter more than minimal hold-up. Both options integrate with automatic fraction collectors, vacuum systems, and receivers.

Automation covers heating, reflux or takeoff control, distillate collection, and safe shutdown. That supports unattended runs for solvent purification, petroleum fractions, biodiesel cuts, and other laboratory fractional distillation work. Contact surfaces are commonly glass and Teflon for spinning band configurations.

Model family Typical charge Best for
Micro (800) ~7-100 ml Scarce samples, highest efficiency on tiny charges
Mini (36-100) ~100-2000 ml Very high plate count on small lab samples
Lab scale (9600) 1-50 L Standard lab fractional distillation apparatus
Pilot scale 50-1000 L Stainless pilot / small production

Questions

Lab Scale Distillation FAQ

What sample sizes does the 9600 handle?
Boiling flask sizes of 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, 22, and 50 liters. That range covers most multi-liter laboratory fractional distillation work without moving to pilot equipment.
Spinning band or packed column?
Spinning band columns: high efficiency, low hold-up, good for valuable samples and close-boiling mixtures. Packed columns: higher throughput when rate matters more than minimal hold-up. The 9600 supports either.
How does lab scale compare to mini and micro?
Micro and mini systems target sub-liter charges with very high separating power. The 9600 is the lab scale fractional distillation apparatus for 1-50 L. Pilot systems start around 50 L in stainless steel.
Can it run unattended?
Yes. Automatic heating, distillation control, fraction collection, and shutdown with optional PC control support unattended laboratory distillation runs.
