Recycling Perc (Perchloroethylene)

Perc, also known as perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene, is a popular non-flammable solvent. It is commonly used in dry cleaning and as a metal parts degreaser. This customer uses Perc in a laboratory setting.

How Perc is recycled

Perc is recycled by fractional distillation. Fractional distillation separates according to boiling point. The first fraction distilled over is the low boiling contaminants. The second fraction distilled over is pure Perc. The high boiling contaminants stay behind in the boiling flask.

The corrosion problem

Recycling Perc has a challenge. It can be corrosive to stainless steel during distillation.

The B/R spinning band distillation system distills the Perc with a 12 liter boiling flask. Perc has a boiling point of 121°C. All the components of the system are glass or Teflon. This avoids the possibility of corrosion.

Automatic control

The entire distillation process is controlled automatically from beginning to end. No operator intervention is required.
