The Determination of Organic Chloride Content in Crude Oil

Organic chlorides do not occur naturally in crude oil. There are several possible sources of contamination including chlorinated solvents used in dewaxing pipelines or other equipment.

Organic chlorides often decompose during refinery processes such as distillation, reforming and hydrotreating. One of the products of decomposition is hydrochloric acid (HCl). Since many refinery components are easily corroded/damaged by HCl, it is essential to monitor levels of organic chlorides in crude oil to prevent introduction of this contaminant into refinery processes.

The B/R D4929 distillation system is used for the first step in the test which is to distill the naphtha fraction from the crude oil from the initial boiling point up to 204°C vapor temperature. The organic chlorides have boiling points in this range and so will be concentrated in this naphtha fraction.

After distillation, the naphtha fraction is washed with caustic and water to remove hydrogen sulfide.

Detection of the organic chloride concentrations in the naphtha fraction can be performed by:

  1. Sodium biphenyl reduction followed by potentiometric titration
  2. Oxidative combustion followed by microcoulometric titration
  3. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

How the D4929 Method Works

Distill

The crude oil is distilled to recover the naphtha fraction, from the initial boiling point up to 204°C vapor temperature, where the organic chlorides concentrate. This is the step the B/R system performs.

Wash

The naphtha fraction is washed with caustic and water to remove hydrogen sulfide.

Analyze

The organic chloride concentration in the naphtha is measured by potentiometric titration, microcoulometric titration, or X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.
